Sketching in Galle Fort with Local Artist Elita

Discover Galle Fort through the eyes of local artist Elita on a slow, personal sketching experience that blends walking, drawing, and conversation. Wander through the Fort’s quieter corners, stop at places that inspire you, and create your own artwork using watercolours, pencils, or colour pencils. No previous drawing experience is needed — there is no lesson to follow, no perfect picture to produce, and no pressure to get it “right.” Just time to notice the Fort differently, sketch at your own pace, and end the experience over tea with Elita.

More about

Step away from the usual sightseeing and experience Galle Fort through sketching, conversation, and the perspective of someone who grew up here. Local artist Elita takes you on an unhurried walk through some of her favourite corners of the Fort, sharing the details and everyday moments that catch her eye along the way. When something inspires you, you’ll stop to sketch it in your own way, with watercolours, pencils, and other materials provided. This is not an art class, and you don't need to know how to draw. There are no techniques to master, corrections to worry about, or expectations for what your finished artwork should look like. It’s simply a chance to slow down, observe Galle differently, and create something personal to take home. The experience ends with tea and time to chat with Elita — a relaxed finish to an afternoon spent looking, sketching, and being present in the Fort.

Come Sketch It With Her

Elita grew up half Belgian, half Sri Lankan, and half of every afternoon of her childhood at the lighthouse beach near the Fort the same water she still swims in, the same sand she still knows the shape of. She painted her first surfboard as a teenager because she wanted to make something out of a blank thing. People liked it. Then she painted other people's surfboards, then tables, then walls, then canvas no art school, no formal training, just the permission she gave herself to keep going.

This isn't a class. There's no technique to master, no right way to hold a pencil, and no finished drawing you're expected to produce. It's an invitation hers, really to walk the Fort the way she actually walks it, stop where something catches your eye, and let a couple of hours slow all the way down.

What Happens
You'll meet Elita somewhere unhurried and walk together through a few of the corners of the Fort she genuinely loves old trees, quiet courtyards, doorways, the places where people gather without meaning to. There's no fixed route; it moves with the light, the day, and whoever's walking with her. She points out what she sees rather than telling you what you should see. Then you sit, sketch, and let the page fill however it fills colourful, uneven, entirely yours.

It ends the way most good afternoons here end: with tea, and a conversation that has nothing to do with technique.

Why It's Not a Class

Elita's whole approach comes down to one idea: most people who think they "can't draw" were just told that once, by someone, a long time ago and believed it. So there's no correction here, no critique, no comparison. Just permission to relax, look properly, and make something that doesn't have to be good. It just has to be yours.
