Traditional Mask Painting Workshop
Step into the world of Sri Lankan mask-making through a hands-on painting workshop guided by a traditional artisan in Galle, where you will learn the stories, symbolism, and ritual significance behind these vibrant ceremonial forms while creating your own hand-painted mask to take home.
More about
Sri Lankan ceremonial masks are among the island’s most distinctive cultural art forms. Originating from the southern coastal regions, they were traditionally used in ritual healing ceremonies, folk theatre, storytelling, and social satire. Every colour, expression, and carving carries symbolic meaning, reflecting centuries of inherited craftsmanship and tradition. Today, only a small number of artisans continue this practice with the same depth of knowledge. This workshop offers guests a rare opportunity to explore the tradition firsthand by painting their own mask under the guidance of a master artisan.
The Workshop Experience
Paint your own authentic Sri Lankan mask under the guidance of a master artisan in Galle. A 1.5-hour hands-on cultural craft experience.
The Traditional Mask Painting Workshop takes place in an artisan-led creative space in Galle, where guests are introduced to the history, symbolism, and craftsmanship behind Sri Lanka’s iconic ceremonial masks.
The session begins with an introduction to the cultural origins of mask-making in Sri Lanka exploring the meanings behind different mask types, the role they played in ritual performances, and how they continue to survive today through the work of dedicated artisans.
Guests are then guided through the painting process using a prepared wooden mask blank. Under the close guidance of the artisan, participants learn about traditional colour palettes, brush techniques, symbolic motifs, and the stylistic rules that shape the identity of each mask.
Rather than simply copying a design, guests are encouraged to understand the visual language behind the tradition and interpret it through their own work. The experience remains deeply hands-on and personal, with individual guidance provided throughout the session.
Over the course of 1.5 hours, the blank mask slowly transforms into a completed ceremonial artwork one that carries both personal expression and cultural understanding.
At the end of the workshop, guests take home the painted mask they created themselves. For many, it becomes more than a souvenir; it becomes a meaningful connection to Sri Lanka’s living artistic traditions and one of the most memorable cultural experiences of their journey.

We had a truly magical experience with Soul Ceylon at their traditional mask making experience. We went as a family with ages ranging from 8 to 80, including a teenager, and each of us had a remarkable time. Not only did we learn the incredible history of masks and their symbolism, we learned about, and discussed, the generational production of such work and the importance of its preservation. My two daughters, 8 and 10, took so much away from seeing young artists keep their cultural and family traditions alive and spoke about it for the rest of the day! They also loved wandering the shops in Galle identifying all different masks. In addition, the process of creating our own - with true masters - was amazing. We all created very different masks and felt free to be inspired by tradition but make it our own. We started our session with blessing from the head monk at the temple, an experience that defies words. My eldest daughter said this was magical and we all agreed! Also, dealing with Soul Ceylon for planning was flawless - amazing communication, explanations and follow through. Everything about this was 5 star.

The time arrived for our walking tour with local guide Atheeq - and it was pouring with rain! Atheeq warmly gave us the option to go ahead or to meet us in the morning. He shared his knowledge of Galle Fort, it's history and current daily routines, with us in a fun, engaging and insightful way. The visuals of drawings we could view on the iPad added to the stories and images he described. He also related his personal family stories to us adding a terrific aspect to the tour. The ice cream at the end was great! I highly recommend this friendly tour to you.
